saving technology at farm level, compared with manure and compost, which is more bulky, heavy and time consuming to handle. Another advantage of commercial inorganic fertilizers is the declared nutrient content, which makes it possible to apply the nutrients more exactly in comparison with spreading unanalysed organic fertilizers.

As mentioned earlier, fertilizer, both inorganic and organic, brings about problems with nutrient leakages. The leakage patterns are complicated but are, among other things, related to type of soils, precipitation and eventual overuse of fertilizers, at levels above what the plants are able to absorb. Fertilizer may thus generate negative side-effects. There are also reverse situations, when farmland is exposed to environmental damage, such as acidification of soils because of harmful emissions, for example from road traffic and factories. The problem may be handled with the help of liming, which is briefly discussed in Box 12.7.
